Wireless woes...

General Computer Questions | Network

I just got a wireless network card for my computer and I cannot connect to my wireless hub. I know the hub is configured and working correctly. I know the SSID and the encryption key. I can see the network in the browse list but when I try to connect I get an error message that I do not have access to the wireless network.

Other computers are connected to this wireless hub. What's up?

It may be as simple as A B or G?

Does you new wireless card match the mode of your wireless hub?
There are currently three 802.11 wireless standards:
B - the oldest and most common, this operates on the 2.4Ghz band and can operate at speeds up to 11Mbps
G - newer and becoming quite common, G devices generally can be set to operate with B mode devices, can operate at speeds up to 54Mbps
A - newest, operates on the 5Ghz band. Incompatible with B and G. Can operate at speeds up to 54Mbps. Has a limited range of operation.

If you can see the SSID of the wireless network with your new card then it is quite possible that you have a combination of B and G devices and that the G device is set to operate only with other G mode devices.

Your wireless hub is the most likely culprit. Check the settings for the wireless hub and look for a setting that will allow "mixed mode" operation.
